Liz will lead you through dyeing fabric with wild mushroom pigments while Enrique explains the art making paper from fungal fibers. And best yet\, all will be done using mushrooms foraged right here in California. \nMushroom Dyeing with Liz\nA forager and herbalist from Vallejo\, Liz will walk you through the full natural dye process: which California mushrooms she uses\, where to find them\, how to prepare dye baths\, and how mordants work to fix color onto fiber. She’ll be showcasing two different colors\, and you’ll get hands-on time at the dye pots and take home a hand-dyed silk scarf as your souvenir. \nWant to bring something special? You’re welcome to bring your own silk\, felt\, or wool piece to dye instead. \nMushroom Paper Making with Enrique\nUsing wild-foraged artist conks and red-belted conks\, Enrique will demonstrate how paper is crafted from fungal slurry. You’ll learn about the fungal characteristics along with using traditional screens and deckles\, all explained with examples from various stages of drying. \nThis element is also hands-on as you’ll have a chance at making your own sheet and take home a piece of real mushroom paper. \nAll supplies for both are included. Book recommendations are provided. DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to let you know we’ve partnered with Young Chef Leaders to present a series of weekend cooking classes for kids aged 9 – 17. \nAll classes are safely led two amazing chefs\, Paige and Celeste\, who have serious culinary chops and credentials to their names. \nAnd they are amazing with the kids. You may recall them from the cooking camps that took place over the summer. \nThe upcoming classes are seasonally-focused and take place in the Castro Valley Marketplace’s community cooking space upstairs the building. There are three unique weekends\, and each class is limited to 10 students each so be sure to claim your spot soon. \nCHANUKAH!  will celebrate the Jewish traditions making our favorite Chanukah dishes from brisket to Sufganiyot (Jelly Doughnuts). \nSaturday\, Dec. 4: 11 am – 3pm | 10 spaces\nSunday\, Dec. 5: 11 am – 3pm | 10 spaces \nEach class costs $200 and you can signup through this link.

SUMMARY:Randy Oliver's Beekeeping Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Castro Valley Natural Grocery and Alameda County Beekeepers Association\, this very popular yearly workshop by Randy Oliver has been sponsored by ACBA . Randy has been a professional beekeeper and now spends full time developing practical applications for both commercial and hobbyist beekeepers. \nAttendees must be vaccinated for Covid-19 and must be members of the ACBA. \nThe workshop is aimed at beginning to intermediate beekeepers\, though in past years even very experienced beekeepers learn something. Morning lecture and afternoon hands-on demonstration so afternoon attendance is limited to 18. Cost $60 per person. The morning lecture session will start at 8:30 am at Castro Valley Natural Grocery. The morning session only is $35 and we can seat up to 50. Your local bees have been busy and soon you’ll get a chance to bring some hyper-local liquid gold home with you. \nOn Wednesday\, October 21st\, our beekeeper Mike of The Bee Ranchers will be extracting the honey in the Castro Valley Marketplace.\nWe’re big on bees in our company\, and of course\, had to have hives on the Castro Valley rooftop where four of them are going strong. The honey is nice and all\, but the reason we keep bees is that they keep us fed and they need our protection. \nThey’ve propped up ecosystems for tens of millions of years\, and are responsible for pollinating about 90% of the world’s nutrition. That’s kind of a big deal. \nMaybe you’ve seen one of our honeybees bounding about town\, so now would be a great time for you and your families to get a direct connection to their work. \nCome see for yourself the final steps of the process of fresh honey being made as it’s extracted\, spun\, and bottled right on site. Mike’s got an encyclopedic knowledge of everything bee. It’s a great chance to learn all about beekeeping\, bees\, honey\, and any other bee-related questions you’ve got.
